It is not easy to call an early Church Father a heretic, especially Origin. Origin was simply one of the greatest of the early Church Fathers who suffered for his faith in Jesus.

I for one will not call these men heretics even Arian--because their hearts were in the right place. My reason is that these men spent so much time examining, interpreting and trying to explain what we today call dogma. It was not an easy process. A lot of attacks and counter attacks occurred in order to arrive at the truth. So even though what we have heard about these arguments --we have to remember this may not be all there is to know about these men. They were Christian and they were fumbling to understand. And all during this period they suffered persecution and some martyrdom. Concomittantly, poor Origen who loved the Lord so much, has been paradoxically been called both the father of orthodoxy and the father of heresy.

Origen led a very disciplined life and devoted himself solely to the service of the gospel. Strictly following Jesus' admonition in Matthew 10:10, he had only one coat, no shoes, and took no thought for the next day. He refused any gifts or pay from his pupils, ate no meat, drank no wine, and slept on the bare floor. Most of the night he spent in prayer and study. Many of his friends and pupils were persecuted or martyred and Origen visited them in prison and showed them many kindnesses.

Origin was born in Alexandria, Egypt in about 185. He was brought up in a Christian home. His father, Leonides, was a teacher who recognized his son's brilliance and provided him with the best Greek education possible. He also had Origen memorize scr1pture every day; even as a boy Origen knew whole sections of the Bible from memory. When Leonides was imprisoned for his faith about 202, under the reign of Septimius Severus, Origen wrote his dad a letter of encouragement not to deny Christ. Origen was eager to join his father in prison and death if necessary; he was prevented only by his mother hiding his clothes when he wanted to give himself up to the heathen authorities. His father Leonides was martyred and his property was confiscated. His wife was left helpless along with seven children, including Origen.

The chief accusations against Origen's teaching were: making the Son inferior to the Father. This was a precursor of Arianism. Arianism was a 4th-century heresy that denied that the Father and the Son were of the same substance. Origin also was accused of spiritualizing away the resurrection of the body and like you have said - denying hell.

Origin apparently had another fault which may have resulted in wrongfully teaching about Christ's coming 1000 year reign on earth which has confused many Protestant and Catholic teachers ever since. His fault: Origins writings indicated a hatred for the Jews! In 325 A.D. the Council of Nicea ruled as dogma that Jesus would reign for 1000 years on earth after He arrives at the Mount of Olives during Armegeddon. Jewish Rabbis have always taught that the Messiah would rule for 1000 years and that was after 6000 years of history - before and after Origin.

Possibly Origen let his hatred for the Jews cloud his thinking. Because he (and his friend Ambrose) taught against the 1000 years rule, which have caused teachers ever since to be in error.

DO NOT BE DECEIVED
(7th day) Jesus Christ will arrive like lightning from the east. All eyes will see Him as He comes in power and Glory together with His angels. He will arrive during the battle of Armegeddon and first touch earth from the same place He departed (Mount of Olives). The mount will split in two at that time. Jesus will reign on earth for 1000 years. At the end of that time, the (8th day) Universe will be renewed (heaven on earth). World without end....
