The only thing about this movie that says Hollywood is the word movie.

It isn't made with a huge budget and it won't need all those warnings about blood and violence and drugs and profanity and sex and nudity. And, it will be screened for free in many churches instead of costing $9 or more to get into a dark theater where you can sit on top of $6 of spilled popcorn.

Assembled by independent movie makers Steve McCurdy and Ken Bailey, "I Flunked Sunday School by Silk Purse Entertainment is the story of a man who as a kid flunked Sunday School. But now he's called upon by God to be a personal preacher, who is, according to leading character Lloyd Boyd, "a little more personal."

"Our picture is like an episode of 'Charlie Brown Grows up,' and becomes a personal preacher," said McCurdy, who co-wrote the script based on Bailey's novel. "The cast and crew are a lot like the Peanuts gang – faithful, innocent, bemused, funny, warm, charming, and clumsy … but well-loved."

It has a talented cast including Kevin Dean, Patty Tuel Bailey, Barbara Lasater, Stuart Purdy, Lee Walker, Clarence Whitmore and Eve Tates.

But one of the biggest differences is the marketing, because it's not going into theaters for its launch.

"We are recruiting scores of churches in the Houston area to run the movie for free throughout the October 13th weekend," said McCurdy. "Moviegoers will be given a postcard with a web address outlining what they can do to facilitate the success of 'I Flunked Sunday School' and other projects of this kind, ensuring their production and wide distribution."

There will be a second weekend of free showings the first part of November, officials said, and after an estimated 10,000 churches nationwide have screened the movie, it will appear in 80-plus cities as a theatrical release.

McCurdy said he believes Christians want good quality movies, but won't go to them only because they're advertised as "Christian."

"Ironically, sometimes people don't go because, they fear, if a movie is labeled 'Christian' it might be too preachy or heavy-handed," he said.

This one, however, shows God's sense of humor, he said.

There is a moral hidden in the movie: for those who ever felt they've failed God or who wonder how God can let terrible things happen.

Which points to the title with the message that no one can really flunk Sunday school.

"One way to have LOTS of people see the movie is the frenzy that commercial success generates, particularly if it is an 'underdog independent,'" said Bailey. "The other is the outrageous idea of giving it away and trusting that God will do with it as He sees fit."

He said he's confident those who see it will be blessed, and won't rest until they've blessed someone else with it.

Just two weeks earlier, "Facing the Giants," a church production that was released in theaters, held its own against Hollywood's big boys, grossing $1.4 million on only 441 screens.
