Dear friend in Christ,
"...what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you..."It is with much joy and wonder that I proclaim to you what "we have seen and heard..." through some marvelous reports of "JESUS," now experienced in 959 different languages.
A traveling film team was showing "JESUS" in Mozambique, in a spiritually resistant community. The people became engrossed in the film, captivated by Jesus' words (the Word of God exactly quoted from the Gospel of Luke). They were amazed by His miracles and then appalled by His unexpected unjust crucifixion.
The film came to the moment when Peter was crying at the empty tomb, before he understood that Jesus had been raised from the dead. The crown nearest the projector heard a sound, like wings. There was a flash of light and a bomb-like burst.
Panic set in. The crowd fled in all directions, screaming, tripping over one another and the equipment. Some people ran so quickly that they left their shoes on the ground.
The team leader was startled too. Now his audience was gone. He checked out the equipment...all was okay. There was no sign of an explosion. He walked around the grounds picking up people's shoes and belongings, then took the microphone. "Come back, everyone. Come back. There is nothing wrong. All is okay."
Slowly the people returned, sat down and settled back in. The team restarted the projector, without incident. The audience realized that Jesus was no longer dead. He was alive, raised from the dead, the victorious Son of God, and Master of all.
What had happened? Witch doctors had walked into the crowd and were in the process of cursing the film team and projector. The team reported that apparently an angel suddenly appeared and attacked the witch doctors, protecting the message, team and projector. The witch doctors also fled and had not returned.
Because the team wanted to show the film again the next night, the village leader forbade any witch doctor from attending.
The entire village realized that the God of the gospel, portrayed in the film "JESUS," was indeed greater than any power their witch doctors might wield. Travel north now across thousands of miles, to where a miracle of a different kind occurred...to Ghana, West Africa. A "JESUS" film team, made up of students, was also showing the film night after night. Even though people were coming to Christ nightly at the showings, the students also wanted to preach the gospel during the day.
So they walked into a busy town marketplace and began to preach. But, to their dismay, they realized that no one in this community spoke English, even though it is the national language of Ghana.
They needed a translator. The team found a man in the crowd. He spoke both fluent English and the local dialect. Joseph agreed to help and came forward. Through him they began to explain the gospel, and how their sins could be forgiven. But something else was going on. The crowd quickly grew large. And the people were very attentive, watching Joseph carefully.
What the team did not know was that they picked a
known criminal as their translator,
a notorious gangster feared by all! And here he was preaching Christ! When the students issued an invitation to give their lives to the Lord, Joseph added his own personal announcement, "
I too am going to receive Christ right now, and I think you should as well."
His life changed---dramatically. Joseph continued in ministry with the team and other students, serving as a translator! During the next few weeks several film teams in the group showed "JESUS" in 32 communities. Partly through Joseph's help, about 15,000 people saw "JESUS" and understood the gospel. An estimated 6,000 people indicated decisions for Christ! How great is our God!
One last story of personal commitment...the lengths these teams will go so that their own people might come to Christ. Members of a "JESUS" film team were transporting their film equipment by vehicle to a distant village. The road became increasingly rough, until they could go no further. They were still miles away from their destination.
They picked up the equipment and walked. One team member hoisted the generator, the heaviest piece of equipment, to his shoulder. He and his colleagues walked for hours over rough trails. Near dusk they arrived. When the team member put the generator down, the skin was peeling from his shoulder!
Such commitment! You see, they are willing to experience hardship and risk beatings, confrontations with witch doctors, being driven out, or killed. They are like other committed servants of old whom the book of Hebrews describes as "
...men of whom the world was not worthy."
If you can manage to help keep these film teams spreading the gospel, only $50 will help 500 people to experience the Word of God in their own language via the film "JESUS".
