John,
The Bible says that ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) The wages of sin is death---eternal separation from God forever. (Romans 6:23) But the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:8 says that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Romans 10:9-10 says that if we confess with our mouth and believe in our heart that Christ was raised from the dead we shall be saved. Romans 10:13 tells us that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved. I believe that it is important to accept the doctrines set forth here---we are separated from a holy God because we are born with a sin nature. The only way to be accepted by God and to have peace with God is to come to Him on his terms. According to His terms, there is only ONE provision, one door, one way to reconcile and that is through Jesus. To accept Jesus as Savior means that we humbly submit and surrender our lives to Him, totally abandoning and relinquishing ourselves. In that act of faith and surrender, the Holy Spirit enters and we are "born again". From that point forward, we are new creatures. (2 Corinthians 5:17). Once we are new creatures, I think we cannot lose our salvation, although we can lose the joy of fellowship if we fall back into the old lifestyle. I think that is why it is important to join a local church where you can make friends with other believers and grow in the Word of God. One thing about being saved is that your heart is changed and you will find that many things you used to hate, you now love and many things you used to love, you now hate. You will be more sensitive to the Spirit and since He indwells you now, He will empower you to live for God. Your life will be marked by a gradual growth toward God and away from sin. I think God is interested in a relationship with you and wants to live THROUGH you to reach a lost and dying world. Jesus said in Luke 19:10 that He came to seek and save the lost. We are His ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20) and we speak and act in His behalf. If you have repented of your sin and have totally surrendered all that you know of yourself to all that you know of Him, congratulations! You are adopted into His family. Now you are charged to "put on" the new self and to "put off" the old self. Many books of the Bible explain our doctrinal position in Christ and then go on to explain HOW we are to appropriate our new position. There are also study guides to help a new Christian...the one that I used when I was saved in 1991 was entitled "A Handbook For Christian Maturity" by Bill Bright. It is also important to confess your commitment to Christ before a body of believers and to request baptism as a public testimony.
