In June 2002 national headlines reported a chartered bus contracted by Metro Church in Garland was headed to church camp. Just outside of Terrell it crashed into concrete bridge support pillars killing four teenagers and the driver. My son, Jeremy, was on this bus. Originally, there were five teenagers reported dead; he was the fifth teenager. However, God's promise of complete healing and restoration would prove to be true. He was life-flighted to Tyler where against all odds he not only lived, but was completely RESTORED by God's Word!

From day two of the accident God put in my heart we must share our story. As a result, I have written a book entitled, You May Have a Ph.D., But I Know G.O.D (Tate Publishing, Mustang, Oklahoma) which has just been released.

I wrote this book because I needed to share what God has done and encourage others going through trials that seem impossible. Most important, I wrote it real with every emotion possible because even though we're Christians, we still have human hearts and need to express those feelings. Until we went through our ordeal I had no idea what people in these types of circumstances went through. Thus, another reason I wrote the book was so to give people a "birds eye view" so they could experience what people go through and be better equipped to help them. In fact, at the end of the book I wrote a section entitled, "How to Help Someone in Crisis."

Some have asked how I would have felt it he had died. I can't explain it, but I knew that he wouldn't. In addition, I can't speak about something I haven't experienced. I know two of the families that lost their children. In fact, I sang with one of the father's as part of the Praise Team. They are all aware that I have written this book and are grateful that Jeremy lived.

Sincerely,
Terri De Shazo-Arnett

PREFACE

On June 24, 2002, a chartered bus contracted by Metro Church from Garland, Texas, was on its way to Louisiana State University for church camp. At precisely 9:10 a.m., the bus veered to the right beyond the shoulder of Interstate 20 outside of Terrell, Texas. It was traveling 65 mph, and crashed into the first of two concrete bridge support pillars. The driver and four teenagers died instantly. There were no skid marks.

The sudden impact ripped the bus in two, peeling back the left-side paneling, causing it to wrap around the first pillar like a blanket. As the front of the bus pushed past the first pillar, its front wheels turned completely to the left, facing the right shoulder of the highway, while the main portion of the bus came to a grinding halt on the right side of the second pillar.

Some teenagers and seats were propelled from the bus, either through the now-missing windshield or through the newly created opening. Other teens remained trapped inside. Some suffered life-threatening injuries while others were hospitalized in stable condition. Miraculously, most of the teens walked away without a scratch. Personal items, luggage and musical instruments from inside and below the bus scattered 200 feet beyond the point of impact.
Seated five seats back on the right, my son Jeremy was hurled through the opening where the left side of the bus used to be, landing just inches from the deadly pillars. He was deposited into a pool of diesel fuel, battery acid, coolant, and brake and hydraulic fluids. Seats struck his body with brute force, while his good friend landed on the seats. His friend would walk away. Under the seats, Jeremy’s twisted and broken body lay motionless while emergency crews gave attention to others, believing he was dead.

As ominous reports began to reach us, our response was not to the physical impossibilities, but rather to the miraculous power of God’s Word!
This is our story.
